Richard “Neil” Governor, age 88, passed away May 24, 2021 at his daughter’s home in Georgia after a brief battle with cancer.
Neil was born February 19, 1933 in Nutwood, Ohio. He graduated from Fowler High School in 1951 and earned his degree from Youngstown State University in 1955. He served as a Marine Corp aviator and later in the Ohio National Guard Reserve. Neil dedicated himself to a distinguished career in property and casualty insurance in Columbus, Ohio before retiring to Pensacola Florida in 1995. Throughout his life his passion was flying.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Marion Joyce Creighton who died in 2010, his second wife, Merrilyn Boyd-Smith who died in 2021, and his daughter Debbie Governor Woods who died in 1992. Neil is survived by his son, Eric Governor of Gahanna, Ohio, his daughter Donna Governor and her husband Larry Morris of Dahlonega, Georgia, his sister Nancy Fee and her husband Roger of Missoula, Montana, four grandchildren, and several great- and great-great grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank all those who knew and loved Neil over the years for their friendship. A private, family memorial will be held at a later date in Pensacola. The family requests that any memorials be made to the Georgia Mountains Unitarian Universalist Church building fund in Dahlonega, Georgia.
