John Neil Hillman age 89, of Dahlonega, GA passed away on Saturday July 17,2021. He is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert R. Hillman Sr. and Elizabeth “Betty” Hillman, a brother, Herbert R. Hillman Jr, an infant daughter Alice, and his son, William Scott Hillman. John is survived by his wife Karen and five children: Colleen Robbins, Joy Keaveney, Cindy Ann Reiter, Deborah Allen Dee and Michael Dee. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. John is a proud veteran that served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He attended college at Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY and later at Hofstra Night School on Long Island. He worked as an electronics engineer and retired from Airborne Instruments Laboratories. John was an adventurer at heart, climbing 20 of New Hampshire’s 40 tallest mountains, holding a small plane pilot’s license, qualifying for a Captain’s license for ships over 200 tons, running a dive boat in the Virgin Islands, and completing a motorcycle Iron Butt Ride from Dahlonega to New Orleans for lunch, and then returning all within 24 hours. He gave up his motorcycle keys at 84 years old. He was a hobby photographer and several of his photographs of the sailing ship Enchantress were selected for a series of limited-edition plates. John liked to travel as well, he did a two-year work-related cruise on an aircraft carrier and spent 2 years living and working in Egypt. John and his wife traveled the US by motorcycle and cruised to Ireland, Norway, China, Alaska, and many of the Baltic & Mediterranean countries. After living for 19 years on their sailboat in the Virgin Islands and Florida, they eventually found a true home in Dahlonega, Georgia. He leaves behind numerous friends in many states and countries. John was a member of St Peter Lutheran Church in Dahlonega and the Copper Green Prayer Group. He also volunteered for the American Red Cross, Georgia Region. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 26, 2021 from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. at the Dahlonega Funeral Home. A grave side service will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 weather permitting at 10:30 A.M. at the Dahlonega Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Gerhard C. Michael presiding.
