James Fred Weil

August 2, 1943 ~ August 19, 2021 (age 78)

Obituary

Fred Weil, age 78, passed away on Thursday August 19, 2021. He is preceded in his death by his parents Jim and Glenna Weil and wife of 48 years, Bonnie Nickeson Weil.  He is survived by his sister Judy Poche, daughter Jenna Weil Lacy and husband David Lacy, son David Weil and wife Michelle Weil, daughter Katie Weil Sessions and husband Jay Sessions, grandchildren Haley Weil, Claire Lacy, AJ Weil, Charlotte Sessions, loving nieces and nephews.  Fred was a graduate of East Jefferson High School, attended Louisiana State University before joining the army to serve in the Vietnam War.  During his two tours in Vietnam, he rose to the rank of First Lieutenant and served as Combat Engineer Unit Commander.   His time in Vietnam shaped his life in many ways and proved to be just the beginning of a lifetime of service.  Fred was a CASA volunteer for 6 years and Board Chairman for 6 years.  He served on the board of Rainbow Children’s Home, The Children’s Center for Hope and Healing, Vietnam Veterans of America and The Georgia State Mental Health Board.  He was a mentor in the Lumpkin County School system.  Fred was an active member of Dahlonega United Methodist Church and a Sunday school teacher at Christ the King Lutheran church and Grace Presbyterian Church.  He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, community volunteer and friend.  He was passionate about his Louisiana heritage, especially the food, music, and LSU football.  Fred will always be remembered for doing the right thing even when it was difficult, seeing virtually every issue from both sides, and reminding us that we were never alone, even in the darkest of times.  Our dad was truly a wonderful man, an amazing father, soccer coach, Braves fan, and King of school projects.
