Charis Johnson

May 14, 2022

Charis Knapp Johnson passed away on May 14, 2022, after 97 years of serving her Lord and Savior. She was born in Moultrie, GA to Charles and Mary Knapp.  Charis always enjoyed talking about her unusual name, which she said had been a “conversation piece” all of her life.  Its origin is Greek, and means “grace” or “gift of God.”  A good friend commented “her parents must have had an insight from God into what her life would be like when they named her.”

Charis graduated from Mercer University.  It was there that she met L.H. Johnson, the love of her life, and they shared 66 years of happy marriage before he passed away in 2010.  She was also predeceased by her three brothers, Charles, Bill and Frank Knapp.

She was raised in the Presbyterian Church, but became a Baptist when she married L.H., who was a Minister of Education and Administration in Baptist churches in several states.  After retirement, they became members of Clairmont Presbyterian Church.  Charis was a gifted Sunday School teacher and served in that capacity all of her adult life.  She was blessed with talent in more than one area.  Through the years she was a writer of church study books, a school teacher, and a church secretary.

One of the joys of her retirement years was serving as a volunteer at The Carter Center.  Every Thursday for 27 years she could be found there, answering emails, conducting tours, preparing packets of material for mailings, or doing whatever was needed.  It gave her great satisfaction to feel that she had a small part in something that made a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Her family always came first, and her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the source of her greatest happiness.  She is survived by her son Kevin Johnson and wife, Sherri, her daughter Kimberly Bruscia and husband, Joe, grandson Zachry Johnson and wife, Sally, granddaughter Abigail Burgess and husband, Benjamin, granddaughter Morgan Johnson, step granddaughter Jennifer Bruscia and four great grandchildren, Harper and Hugh Johnson, Pyper and Ember Burgess, and two step grandchildren Alex and Mia Edwards.

Charis firmly believed that she would be reunited with her beloved husband, and all other family members and friends who preceded her in death – “when we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be!

A memorial service will be held at Clairmont Presbyterian Church on Saturday, June 25th at 2:00pm. Reception to follow in fellowship hall.
